The Tour de France has thrown up many legends over the years, but none more iconic to the French themselves than the legendary pair of Jacques Anquetil and Bernard Hinault.
Jacques Anquetil - From the first day he seriously straddled a cycle, "Anq" had a sense of perfection most riders only dream of. For much of his career he won tours in a 'quiet' way that the public didn't appreciate. For weeks he could stay close to his enemies, and then attack in a time trial. His method of 'just enough' didn't appease those who craved bold moves. Known as ' Monsieur Chrono' for his ability to pedal with clockwork smoothness and at constant speed, Anquetil will always be known for his total dominance of the tour in the early 1960s, winning 4 consecutive tour titles from 1961-1964. He was the first rider to win the Tour on five separate occasions -- 1957, 1961, 1962, 1963 and 1964.
Bernard Hinault Also had a sensational cycling record. Hinault won the Tour at his first attempt and went on to match Anquetil's record of five Tour de France victories. Nicknamed 'The Badger' because of his fighting style when cornered, Hinault was a complete rider like Merckx who could climb, sprint and time trial with the best. Hinault's record of ten Grand Tour victories is second only to Merckx. He won the tour on five separate occasions in 1985, 1982, 1981, 1979 and 1978 and was the last Frenchman to win the Tour.
This program features an in depth look at these two legendary cyclists and also includes highlights from the Tour's early heroes, Maurice Garin, Eugene Christophe, Rene Vietto and Louison Bobet as well as the 'eternal second', Raymond Poulidor.

| Legends Of The Tour - Eddy Merckx |

AU$26.85

Eddy Merckx dominated the sport of cycling for a decade from the mid-1960s to the mid-1970s in a way that no one before or since has managed to do.
He averaged a win every six days of his career. In total he was victorious in professional races 525 times, with successes in more than 35% of all the races he entered. He wasn't fussy; it could be victory in a track pursuit at a half-forgotten velodrome in Belgium or even the Giro d'Italia itself. However, like all cyclists he knew that the greatest stage was the Tour de France and it would be for his exploits in this race that we would be remembered most.
Nicknamed 'The Cannibal' because he seemed to devour his competition, Merckx was simply the best because he aimed to win every time he got on the bike. He is the only rider to win all of the classifications (overall, mountains and points jerseys) in a single year at the Tour de France (1969) and the Giro d'Italia (1968).
He has 34 Tour de France stage wins (the record) including six stages in 1969 and 1972, and eight stages in 1970 and 1974. He won the Tour in 1974, 1972, 1971, 1970 and 1969.
Using superb archival racing footage as well as exclusive interviews with Eddie Merckx himself and many of the great cyclists who rode with him, including Raymond Poulidor, Lucien van Impe and Bernard Thevenet.

Phil Anderson's bid for the 1983 Tour de France
"23 Days in July is one of the best film's ever made on the Tour de France."
" A hidden classic of Australian cinema....."
This brilliant documentary film follows the progress of the legendary Australian cyclist Phil Anderson in his quest for the winner's yellow jersey in the the 1983 Tour (won by Laurent Fignon). Hopes were high that he could achieve this following his 5th place in 1982, when he held the jersey for several days and took a stage victory. In 1981 he achieved worldwide fame when he became the first Australian to wear the maillot jaune in his very first tour.
His victory in the classic, Amsted Gold in the spring of 1983 was prove that he was a winner, and this marvelous film follows Phil in his attempt to win the sport's biggest prize. Anderson riding for the Peugeot team, discusses his training and strategy for winning the Tour, while veteran cycling journalists John Wilcockson and Phil Ligget provide analysis and day-to-day coverage of the race.
Produced and directed by Tim Sullivan.
Tim Sullivan spent most of his career in the Australian film industry and made over 200 films, but it was his documentary on the Tour de France that was perhaps his best known work.
